AUDIO BOOKS Listening to books helps students build literacy skills including comprehension, fluency and vocabulary. The Media Center provides access to a collection of audio books for all students through the MackinVIA app accessed through ClassLink e-Library. See image below. AV EQUIPMENT A selection of AV equipment is available for staff to use to enhance their instruction in the classrooms, including document cameras and extra computer screens. If you are interested in checking out an item, please let us know! BEANSTACK Beanstack is an online reading challenge and tracking program that FCS is providing to students to help build a culture of reading at school, as well as at home. This is also available for all students through the Beanstack app accessed through ClassLink e-Library. Stay tuned for more details as the program is rolled out in the district. BOOKS The Media Center has a balanced collection of more than 10,000 print books selected in accordance with the American Library Association's Library Bill of Rights and designed to serve the needs of all its users. Online Browsing All staff and students have 24/7 access to browse the online catalog through the Destiny app accessed through ClassLink e-Library. In-Person Browsing and Book Checkout Students have the opportunity to select books at the end of each Media Center class. This will start after students have had orientation and have checked out books in the Media Center for the first time. 1st-5th grade teachers will receive 5 Media Center Passes for before and during school book checkout. The Media Center will be open from 7:10 am-7:40 am, 8:00 am-11:15 am and from 11:45 pm-2:00 pm. 4th and 5th Grade students can come straight to the Media Center without a pass before school, however 1st-3rd Grade students will need to check in and get a pass first. Please don't send students from 7:40 am-8:00 am (for News and Morning Meetings) and between 11:15-11:45 (for lunch). Students can return books at any time to the black bin outside the Media Center door. Checkout Guidelines Kindergarten students: 1 book 1st, 2nd & 3rd grade students: 2 books 4th & 5th grade students: 3 books Students need to return overdue books before additional books can be checked out, the checkout period is for two weeks. There are no limits for staff, we simply ask that you return materials when you are done with them so that others may use them. CURRICULUM RESOURCES Digital Resources have been curated for K-5 science and social studies units. Click here to access digital content to support student learning. Login to Follett using your FCS credentials. Please let us know if you would like a collection of books to support student learning. DIGITAL CITIZENSHIP STUDENTS All K-5 students will receive instruction on Digital Citizenship. Lessons will be delivered during the first two months of school as a part of Media Center classes. STAFF Dolvin Staff are required by FCS to complete an online lesson--more information coming soon! EBOOKS Dolvin students and staff have access to thousands of eBooks through multiple platforms on Classlink through MackinVIA or Sora (3-5), Capstone Interactive Books are available through Destiny & TumbleBooks and ComicsPlus can be accessed through MackinVia Databases. PebbleGo also has a collection of eBooks for K-2nd graders and is accessible through MackinVia Databases. Let us know if you would like an in person training! INSTRUCTION All students are scheduled to come to the Media Center every other week as part of the specials rotation with Discovery Lab. Instruction for the 2021-22 school year will focus heavily on literacy in keeping with the FCS emphasis on developing skills in this area. We will also focus on Digital Citizenship and Research. LEVELED LIBRARY The Leveled Library, located next to Speech in the 1st Grade Hall, houses thousands of fiction and nonfiction books classified by Fountas and Pinnell from A to Z. Most titles have at least six copies of each and can be checked out in the Media Center. Please bring the books you would like to the Media Center to be checked out before returning to your classroom with them. MAKERSPACE The Media Center has a variety of Makerspace items that we use with students when they come to the Media Center with a Makerspace Pass--more information will be coming soon. Students will learn beginning coding skills, be introduced to robotics and create structures for Novel Engineering. Examples are Legos, K'Nex, Spheros, Ozobots, Cubelets, Keva Planks and more! NOVEL ENGINEERING Novel Engineering is an innovative approach to developing problem-solving skills which combines literature with engineering activities. Students read a book, identify an engineering problem in the book, then design and build a solution. RESEARCH Elementary students are at a critical age to begin to develop strong research skills using quality online resources. We use World Book, Britannica and PebbleGo, which are accessible through ClassLink. VIDEO POLICY AND PERMISSIONS
