Thanks to everyone who supported the Scholastic Book Fair! Many books were bought for classrooms and we had awesome volunteers who helped set up and take down the book fair, volunteers who assisted students with their wish lists and volunteers who helped run the cash register and bag books. We will buy books to support the curriculum with the Scholastic Dollars that we earned!
September is Library Card Sign-up Month! Two Fulton County Public Librarians came to our Scholastic Book Fair and signed-up some families for cards! Make sure to get this great resource if you don't have one already!
We are reading the 2017-2018 GA Picture Book Award Nominees! 3rd-5th graders will read at least 3 of the nominees and do a booktalk about their favorite. K-2nd graders are reading books and doing activities. We read "Schools First Day of School" and are writing Thank You letters to our awesome custodians, Mr. Catlin and Mr. Lee for keeping our school clean.
Birthday Book Club is available through the Media Center! The Birthday Book Club allows you to present your child with a special book during their birthday month and support the Media Center at the same time! Click on the link to find out more!
We are off to a great start in the Media Center. The schedule worked out that we will see classes every other week, alternating with the Discovery Lab! Look for kindergarten and 1st grade students to come home with a license to check out books and a book. All students can keep their books for 2 weeks. Kindergarten students check out 1 book, 1st and 2nd & 3rd grade students can check out 2 books and 4th and 5th grade students can check out 3 books. 1st-5th grade students can visit the Media Center with a pass. The Media Center is in need of some volunteers to help on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. If you would like to volunteer in the Media Center, please contact Mrs. Thomas!
The Dolvin NewsSplash also began this week with students from the Tech Team assisting for the first couple of weeks. A permission form will be coming home for 5th grade students who want to participate in the Morning News.
The Scholastic Book Fair is coming very soon! Classes will begin previewing the book fair Tuesday, September 5th-Friday, September 8th. The book fair will open Friday, September 8th during the K-2 Ice Cream Social from 4:30-6:00 pm. We will be open Monday, September 11th-Thursday, September 14th from 7:10 am-2:00 pm and will stay open until 5:00 pm on Thursday, September 14th. We hope to see you there!

Now that the school year is almost over and the theme of the End of the Year ABC Countdown! for today is Independent Reading Day, I must talk about returning overdue library books! I sent out a challenge to teachers and students to search their classrooms and backpacks for books here at school as well as books at home. Be on the lookout for overdue notices. The last day to check out books is Friday, May 5th and all books are due Friday, May 12th. Please help your students be 100% Accountable and return all library books by May 12th! Thanks for your cooperation!
The 2017-2018 Georgia Picture Book Award Nominees and Children's Book Award Nominees have been announced! We will be reading and doing book talks about these books in the new school year. Have your student read some of these award nominated books this summer!
Speaking of Summer, Ms. Laura Hoefener, Youth Services Librarian from the Northeast/ Spruill Oaks Library will be coming to speak to our school about the Fulton County Public Library Summer Reading Program on Tuesday, May 16th. The Theme is Build a Better World. K and 1st are scheduled to go to the commons at 8 am, 2nd and 3rd at 8:30 am and 4th and 5th at 9:00 am. April is National Poetry Month!
We have been learning about and writing poetry in the Media Center and have focused on writing acrostic poems about Earth Day (April 22nd), Five Senses Poems and writing poems for Poem in Your Pocket Day (April 27th). We even did raps about Earth Day, here is an example.
The Media Center teamed up with The Discovery Lab to teach Kindergarten and 1st grade about plants and planting in the garden! They learned about the plant life cycle in the Media Center by watching a BrainPop Jr. Video and reading eBooks about plants. They then experienced planting in their garden plot and will be watching for sprouts, seedlings, flowers and vegetables!
3rd-5th grade are learning about the Destiny Online Catalog by playing a Breakout EDU Game, Locked in the Library. Students prove their mastery of Destiny by using the catalog to answer questions and look for books. They then solve a puzzle to get a code to breakout!

Please help your student remember to return their library books on time! Library checkout is for two weeks and books can be renewed unless students are waiting for them. Students can come to the Media Center every morning and throughout the day with a pass.

International Day was celebrated on February 8th! We read the GA Picture Book Award Nominees, Emmanuel's Dream and P. Zonka Lays an Egg.
The Month of February honors Black History. In the Media Center we researched famous African Americans that we admire. K-2nd used Pebble Go Biography to learn about Famous African Americans and 3rd-5th grade students used Biography in Context to research Famous African Americans and posted to Padlet.
Read Across America Day/Dr. Seuss' Birthday was celebrated on Thursday, March 2nd. Students read Dr. Seuss books and celebrated this spectacular author! K-2 students read Oh, the Places You'll Go! and wrote about where they want to go.
3rd-5th Grade students are researching the Author, Entrepreneur and Dolvin Alumnae, Lynn Lilly, who will be coming to visit us on Friday, March 24th! She will be discussing the 7 Mindsets and how they relate to her career. She will also be giving each 3rd-5th grade classroom teacher a copy of her book and craft supplies to celebrate DIY Day!
